The United Nations
The United Nations is an international peacekeeping organization that is dedicated to ensuring “life, liberty, independence, religious freedom, and to preserve the rights of man and justice. It was formed for many reasons. One reason was to replace the ineffective League of Nations. Another reason was to prevent another event like WWII from happening. The United States, Great Britain, Soviet Union, and China would enforce peace as “the four policemen."
The Formation of the United Nations
On New Year's Day 1942, President Roosevelt, Prime Minister Churchill, Maxim Litinov, of the USSR, and T.V. Soong, of China, signed short document which later came to be known as the United Nations Declaration. This document pledged the signatory governments to the maximum war effort and bound them against making a separate peace. The next day, 22 other nations signed the document. This was just the beginning of the formation.

The UN Charter
The UN Charter is the foundational treaty of the United Nations. It was drafted on August 14, 1941 and was signed on June 26, 1945 by 50 of the 51 original member countries at the San Francisco War Memorial and Performing Arts Center. Poland, the other member country, was not represented at the conference, but they signed it two months later. The UN Charter was entered into force on October 24, 1945 after being ratified by the original five permanent members of the Security Council (China, France, Soviet Union,
United Kingdom, and the United States). The UN Charter is the foundational treaty of the United Nations and is why the UN is what is what it is today. |
